Hein graduated with a B.comm.Law. and a LL.B. degree from the University of Stellenbosch and obtained a diploma in Tax Law from the University of KwaZulu Natal. He then completed his articles of clerkship at a Cape Town based law firm and together with Christine Cooper and Sonja Barlow established von Lieres Cooper & Barlow in August 2002.
