Romany Sutherland grew up on a small farm in Mpumalanga near the KwaZulu-Natal Border. Her first love has always been medicine. Professionally, Romany has 17 years’ experience as a medical malpractice lawyer.
She has represented Plaintiffs/ Patients as well as Defendants/ Doctors / Hospitals /Department of Health.
In 2001 Romany started a BCur nursing degree through the University of Stellenbosch wherein she completed the theory and 560 hours of practical training at a large tertiary Hospital in the Western Cape. Romany changed course and started her law degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal which she completed in 2005. In 2006 Romany started her articles at a law firm in Johannesburg which specialized in medical malpractice law. In 2008, after being admitted as an attorney, Romany was offered an associate position at the same firm. In 2010 Romany joined a firm in Cape Town where she was commissioned to assist with starting and running the clinical negligence department.
In 2015, Romany’s life took a very different turn in that her mother was diagnosed with motor neuron disease. Romany felt it necessary to leave practice and join her parents on their family farm in rural Mpumalanga to assist in nursing her mother for two and a half years.
In November 2017 Romany was invited to join LLA Inc. a boutique firm in Cape Town, which specialized in complicated clinical negligence matters. She worked at LLA Inc. until November 2019 when she was invited to join Norton Rose Fulbright SA in their Cape Town office.
In 2022, alongside her medical practice, Romany was made a Director at Norton Rose Fulbright SA INC. where she managed to lead two teams, one in Cape town (medical Law) and one in Johannesburg (Aviation).
In late 2023, Romany decided to embark on a new challenge, opening her own consultancy called “Resolve Advisory”. Romany works as a medical law consultant for local and international businesses and runs a coaching practice for the medical profession.
In 2024, Romany was invited to come back to LLA Inc. as the founder of the firm has decided to retire. This transition will take place in 2025.
