Johan is a commercial law and litigation specialist. He studied B.Proc, LLB at the University of the Free State and graduated cum laude in 1994. Thereafter he was admitted to the South African Bar in 1995 and the Lesotho Bar in 2002. He practiced as an advocate in South Africa and Lesotho until 2006 when he was admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa. After his admission as an attorney with the right of appearance in the High Court of South Africa, Johan joined Webbers Attorneys as an associate attorney in Bloemfontein. In 2010 he relocated to Johannesburg and joined Nelson Borman & Partners in 2010 where he became a director leading up the commercial litigation department.
Aside from his extensive experience as a commercial and litigation lawyer, Johan also earned many accolades such as:
- The Moritz Bobbert Trophy for the top candidate at the Legal Education and Development School for Legal Practice in 2005 having achieved the top mark in Magistrates Court Practice, Legal Costs, Business Entities, Constitutional Law, Labour Law, High Court Practice, Commercial Litigation, Commercial Agreements, Practice Management, and Legal Accounting, and
- Obtaining the top mark in the National Litigation Competition (99%) and National Commercial Competition (99%) in 2005.
Johan acts as panelist/arbitrator at ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) Access in commercial and labour law disputes. He is also certified to act as chairman on behalf of ESKOM in commissions of inquiry and completed the IRCA Root Cause Analysis certification.
Although a large part of his practice is focused on commercial work, he often appears in litigious matters in the High Court in Johannesburg and Pretoria as well as the surrounding Magistrates Courts in Randburg, Roodepoort, and Johannesburg. Several of the litigious matters in which he appeared were also reported in the South African Law Reports and are still referred to as authority in case law.
