Tracy holds the degrees BProc (cum laude) and LLB from the University of Pretoria and an LLM, with specialisation in Intellectual Property Law, from the University of South Africa. She qualified as an attorney in 1996. Tracy has specialised in intellectual property law since 1996 and qualified as a trade mark practitioner in 1997. She was a partner at one of South Africa's leading intellectual property law firms before leaving practice to pursue academic interests. Tracy has lectured on intellectual property law at the University of South Africa. Her research focuses on the protection of traditional cultural expressions and she has presented guest lectures on these topics at other Southern African universities. Tracy handles all aspects of trade mark and copyright law in South Africa as well as the rest of Africa and overseas. She is a Fellow of the South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law (SAIIPL).
