Ian is a director in the Commercial Law Department at Van der Spuy & Partners, where he specialises in providing a broad range of corporate and commercial services to private and institutional clients, including corporate structuring and taxation, commercial contracting and Black Economic Empowerment.
After completing his BA LL.B degree at Stellenbosch University, his passion for the law inspired him to pursue a career as a state prosecutor in 1987 and from later that year as a tax advocate for the South African Revenue Service at their Head Office until 1989. From December 1989 to February 1992 he worked at Boland Bank’s Head Office as a Manager of the corporate and project finance division specialising in tax law.
Ian joined the Van der Spuy family in 1992 and was admitted as an attorney, notary and conveyancer in 1994. Ian approaches every task with dedicated focus, bringing his more than 35 years of commercial experience to bear in support of his clients and making him a sought-after specialist in the commercial sector.
Ian’s other passion is motorcycles. He often arrives at the office on his red Vespa and on weekends he enjoys exploring the Cape Winelands on his Harley Davidson with his wife, who is the Principal at Paarl Girls High, sometimes accompanying him.
