Ian was born in Johannesburg on the 10th of May 1942. He attended Kingswood College in Grahamstown, where he matriculated in 1959. He obtained B.Juris and BA degrees from the University of Pretoria and an LLB degree from the University of South Africa. He commenced his career as a state prosecutor in Pretoria. In 1965 he left the Department of Justice and became articled to Bowman Gilfillan & Blacklock, Attorneys of Johannesburg. He was admitted as an attorney in 1968 and thereafter as a conveyancer.
On relocating to East London in 1968, Ian was a partner in the legal firm, Brown Hurly & Clark. He left this firm in 1969 to establish his own firm, I C Clark & Co., which subsequently became IC Clark Inc. Ian has practiced as an attorney for more than fifty years. He married Cheryl and has three children born of the marriage, namely Kerry who is a consultant with his firm, Stuart who is an advocate and Candice who is a senior legal advisor to the NHS in London. Ian was a keen rugby, cricket and tennis player. He has acted as a Judge of the High Court of South Africa. He has acted for government, municipalities, banks, and Road Accident Fund and the State Attorney. More recently he has acted on the behalf of claimants against the Road Accident Fund and in medical negligence claims and claims against various Defendants.
With more than 50 years of experience, Ian has during his time handled many types of matters on behalf of Plaintiffs or Defendants and also the registration of transfers and bonds.
